DCism in a Nutshell
So after months of trying to explain the overall personality of my beloved city to old friends back home, newcomers, or just anecdotally in the course of conversation, I was delighted to come across a summary today that seems to fit the bill. The phrase comes from a comment on the DCist in a post about the recent snow/ice storm and accompanying commuting difficulties. While the poster was referring specifically to people who comment on the DCist blog, I personally think it's not too much of a stretch to extend the thought to a fair segment of the city's population (myself included, lest I offend). DCites are people who "take a minor inconvenience as an assault on [their] basic human rights." This, not ineptitude, laziness, or latent Southern sensibilities, is the reason why DC has such difficulty with snow. We can't handle protesters and tourists for the same reason. Of course, the snow and ice and everything is dealt with and life goes on, but the attendant hyperventilation is caused simply by the fact that we love a good opportunity to complain about disruptions to our perfectly scheduled, busy, and very important lives and we are really, really angry that we can't legislate the weather.
In other news, it's been 16 hours since the snow STOPPED and my street still hasn't been plowed - and I know I don't drive or anything, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to complain about it.

Hell yeah it's an inconvenience to almost break your neck every time you walk down the street. But you're right, we should just write angry letters to the city and shut up about it already.
Isn't that sort of the default attitude of Americans to life in general? I mean, people are getting killed over road rage incidents elsewhere, too.
