The Good Old Times

I saw this band tonight at a local coffeeshop. I went with an old friend of mine, ran into more old friends, drank a really sticky frapp and enjoyed some great live music. Somewhat to my surprise, the guitarist in the band is Marcus, an old high school buddy of mine, who I knew used to do the local-band-in-coffeeshop thing way back when, but had no idea he was still doing it. More faces from the crowd-back-then came in the door as the night progressed. I really never expected to be hanging out with these folks at this age -- I haven't even seen some of them in two years -- but it is a little different now to look around and see all of us grown up and independent, not the insecure youth-groupies of years past.
I went to wash the whip cream/caramel sticky off my hands during a break in the show, and passed the band in the hallway having a band moment. Marcus looked at me and waved. "Hi, you remember who I am?" I smiled. "Yeah, I remember you." He made some joke and stuck his hands in the pockets of his punk-rock jeans as everyone laughed. Just like he used to do. I grinned. Some people don't change much, and that's good.
